HDR Photography: see what you’ve been missing

French Cottage ComparisonA friend of mine just pointed me to some of the amazing work that’s going on right now in relation to High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI). Needless to say, I was intrigued and decided to take a couple photos and give it a shot. Before I describe how I shot and prepared this photograph, let me see if I can give a quick and dirty description of what’s going on here.

Typical cameras (both analog and digital) only have a certain dynamic range they can describe–meaning there is a fixed range between the brightest white and the darkest black. In the real world the ratio of light to dark looking with our eyes is often 10,000 to 1–we perceive the brightest portion to be 10,000 times brighter than the darkest. However with cameras, and especially digital cameras, you’re lucky to capture a dynamic range of 4000 to 1. In practice you might only get a dynamic range of 2500 to 1. With HDR, you theoretically have an infinite dynamic range (really limited only by the device you’re using to display the image).

As a result of this limited ability of cameras to capture the full dynamic range of a scene, most photographs we see never show everything that our eyes can see. Think of taking a birthday photograph at night on a restaurant patio. With the flash from the camera, you’ll probably get all the people properly exposed, but you probably won’t be able to see much else in the background (and the picture won’t generally look exactly like you remember it). Imagine if you could see all your friends, the people at the next table and the cars and businesses across the street. HDR can deliver that experience in a single photograph. Now let’s see how this was done.

Don’t miss Spurlock and “30 Days” starting Wednesday 7/26 on FX

Morgan SpurlockI have to admit that I’m biased, but 30 Days is one of the best shows on television and it’s second season starts up tomorrow, Wednesday, July 26th at 10PM E/P on FX. Answering the question, “What would it be like if I spent 30 days living as X?”, the series puts Morgan Spurlock and five other people into situations that they might typically avoid. In documentary form, you don’t know what’s going to happen during that month, but at its base, just being exposed to people who think differently usually leaves you changed in some way.

Last year, Morgan’s month living on minimum wage showed how just trying to survive day-to-day might be nearly impossible, no matter how motivated and productive you were. This episode of 30 Days inspired Oprah Winfrey to devote more than one of her shows to the topic of the minimum wage. It’s no surprise with the Republicans in charge of the White House, the House and the Senate that the Federal Minimum Wage remains at the same level as it was last year (and the same level it has been for the last 10 years, which is now worth $4.04/hour due to inflation). You might think that the high costs of gasoline might be hitting folks hard who are trying to survive at $5.15/hour, but having watched Morgan and his fiance struggle I’m pretty sure that one is unlikely to be driving a car much at that salary anyway. On a positive note, some have noted that pushing for an increase in the minimum wage is a popular (70+% in favor) way for the Democrats to get elected this Fall.

Overall though, the episodes make you think and this new season is no exception. Leading off the six episodes this season is an episode on Immigration. In this episode, a die-hard anti-illegal immigration Minuteman lives with an immigrant family in Los Angeles. This episode is so great I’m not really sure how to describe it. You’ll just have to watch. Standing in front of the dubbing rack watching an early cut of this episode brought tears to my eyes. It’s a very emotional journey and one of the best episodes of television our company has produced.

Other episodes in this season cover global outsourcing (by sending a guy to India to get his job back), atheism, and the correctional system (which has Spurlock sentenced to 30 days in the slammer).

If you want the complete list of the topics covered you can visit the Actual Reality Pictures 30 Days page or you can go check out the FX home page for 30 Days. Set your Tivo/Replay/Windows Media Center PC to record the entire season. You won’t regret it.

World War 3? Matthews and others take it to the Neocons

So I don’t generally have a lot of political stuff in here, but when it seems that every day we wake up with the world even more screwed up than the day before, I thought this post from Daily Kos really summed it up. Or more specifically, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews uttered something that I’ve been saying for months and months:

We’ve killed 50,000 Iraqi’s in a war that was supposed to be a two-day wonder. When are we going to notice that the neocons don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re not looking at this country’s long term interest. They’re bound up in regional and global ideology and they have had no experience, I’ll say it again, in even a school yard fight. They don’t know what physical fighting is all about.

Larry Johnson, the former CIA officer and counter-terrorism official, sees a lot of danger in the current Middle East situation as well. It’s worth noting that Larry pretty much had the Neocons’ number about the war in Iraq and the outing of Valerie Plame. He’s certainly worth listening to now. I’d certainly just his judgement more weight than that of a president who thinks it’s alright to give another head-of-state a backrub.

As many of the Neo-conservative chickenhawks in the Republican party are starting to beat the drums for an even greater expansion of their failed policies around the Middle East and the “war on terror”, how can we trust them?

Colbert vs. Congressman Robert Wexler

Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL 19th District) gets the Colbert treatment, reinforcing the belief that a Congressman will do anything to get on TV. “I enjoy cocaine because it’s a fun thing to do…I enjoy the company of prostitutes …because it’s a fun thing to do. If you combine the two together, it’s probably even more fun.” – Wexler

It’s rather sad that American Idol contestants get more media training than our elected representatives. Happy Friday, everyone!

Wicked Andrew Kelly mix available for download

Andrew KellyHailing from the UK, Andrew Kelly is a brilliant dj and producer with tastes that range from the experimental beats and clicks to main room burners. A brand-new mix from Kelly, Oslo Nights, is posted on Hybridized.org that leans towards the latter. In his mixes, he frequently is the producer or remixer of many of the tracks contained within the mix. This mix is no exception, containing four Kelly productions (at least):

1) Andrew Kelly – Sometimes I’m You (Intro Edit) – CDR
2) D-Nox – Seven Hours (Martinez Apocalypse Now Remix) – Electribe
3) Andrew Kelly – Not Responsible – CDR
4) M’Ocean feat Michelle Chivers – Vertigo (Andrew Kelly Mix) – Feralcode Records
5) Bjorn Fogelberg – A Brand New World (Andrew Kelly Mix) XAKK Records
6) Nick K – Who Needs Vocals Anyway – Gangsta Audio
7) Slok – Lonely Child (Satoshi Tomiie 3D Remix) – Saw Recordings
8) Musgrove & Mcgrath – Rollerdiscoking – EQ Records
9) Silver City – Shiver (Ewan Pearson Remix)

It’s available for a free download from Hybridized.org, but consider buying a cheap subscription to get access to Hybridized’s faster downloads. You won’t regret it. In particular, the subscription is worth it just to get Kelly’s mixes and mixes from the best, most prolific DJs you’ve never heard of, Shiloh (the Moreh brothers).

Tired of the phone company? Try the sexy WiFi Skype phone from Belkin

Belkin Skype phoneIf you’re like me, you grew tired of the Baby Bells a long time ago. Unfortunately, given they have the rights to the government-subsidized copper wire running to your home, it has been hard to escape their greedy little hands. Cell phones made it easier to cut the cord, but given that most of the cell phone companies are basically Baby Bell companies now, you’re right back with them again. Now, finally, someone has made a sexy phone that lets you call your friends on Skype using just a WIFI connection.

The Belkin WiFi Phone for Skype is pre-loaded with the Skype software, automatically downloads your contacts from your existing Skype accounts, and supports the majority of the wireless security protocols that are out there today (WEP, WPA, and WPA2 with PSK).

The phone doesn’t have a web browser (probably a huge oversight given that you’ve got a device that inherently connects to the Internet), so good luck getting on a wireless network that requires you to put in your credit card number in a browser. But it looks like the best designed product to come along in this space so far. They’re taking pre-orders at Amazon and the Skype Store. The device retails for $179.99 — a small price to pay to get one step further away from the Bells. [via]
